Thank You for a Meaningful UNESCO Week at Nørre G

In Week 38, we celebrated UNESCO’s 80th anniversary at Nørre G – across subjects, study programmes, year groups, and both the STX and IB sections – with a focus on one of the most important issues of our time: How education can foster hope and empower young people to take action in a world marked by crises.

• The week began with a powerful kickoff on Monday, 15 September – the UN’s International Day of Democracy – where students were introduced to UNESCO’s core values and the UNESCO Youth Ambassadors. We then welcomed author and journalist Christian Bennike, who gave a compelling talk about the spirit of our times: from optimism and belief in the future to a more sombre outlook – and why this shift might be exactly where we can find new energy and purpose.
• The week ended on Friday, 19 September, with the National Climate Action Day, where we watched a film from the Climate Alliance featuring Cecilie Rubow and Niklas Stenbye. This was followed by a thought-provoking talk by Anders Holst Bodin, who shared reflections on the climate crisis and the role of art in creating meaning and hope. During this event, we also introduced the upcoming Nørre G Tree – a beautiful copper beech we will plant together in November as a symbol of rootedness, hope, collective action, and commitment to the future.

The week culminated with the students’ own UNESCO Climate Café.

Leading up to the week, the school's teachers participated in a pedagogical afternoon session with a talk by Rune Valentin Hansen, who inspired us with ideas for empowering teaching that promotes students' capacity to act.

• The UNESCO Week was driven by engagement and curiosity. Through workshops, talks, subject-specific lessons, and student-led activities, we explored the question: How can each of us contribute to positive change?
