ToK field trip for 2i

Friday 11 October, our 2i Theory of Knowledge class (ToK) went on a field trip to both the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) and the Natural History Museum of Denmark (SNM). The current exhibition at SMK is about the "Golden Age" of Denmark (1800-1850). And at SNM they have an exhibition about meteorites and another one about butterflies.

The purpose of the field trip was to make the students think about the role of museums by selecting an item from each museum and discuss questions such as:

  • Does the art piece have a social (or political) function?
  • How does the art piece affect your perception of the world?
  • What is the story behind the exhibit, and what is its significance?
  • What (prior) scientific knowledge is necessary in order to fully understand what the exhibit is communicating

The students then had to prepare a presentation on the result of their thoughts for their next class discussion.
