Barcelona
2015
Together with their teachers Karin Waaben (KW), Andrew Miller (AM) and Thomas Bargfeldt (TB) 2i went on their study trip to Barcelona in early March. They have made an illustrated description of the experience.
On the first day, 2i can’t wait to take a their first group picture outside the Museum of Catalonian History (Museu d'Història de Catalunya), right in the heart of the city, with Barcelona’s harbor serving as background
The dinners were a highlight in our days, and here we see one group about to get just that, at the end of the shopping street La Rambla, almost at the Columbus Monument, a nearly 60m tall tribute to sailor Christopher Columbus, commissioned by the Spanish crown to seek out India
The never ending construction of Gaudí’s design ‘La Segrada Familía’. The inside of the church is filled with an organic atmosphere, as everything is inspired by nature
On the third day the class went on a Gaudí trip, where we visited some of the many renowned works of architecture by Antoni Gaudí. Casa Batlló is a famous Gaudí house, which is remarkable due to the organic quality of the bone-like structures of its balconies
In Cadaqués we got a tour of Dalí’s summer house, which consisted of several small fishing huts connected into one large residence. In the decoration we see Dalí’s fascination with eggs as a symbol of fertility
On our way to the Dalí Museum, our boys take a moment to enjoy the sun, while anxiously waiting to see the masterpieces they heard so much about. The Dalí Theatre-Museum features hundreds upon hundreds of Dalí’s works set out in a huge space with multiple floors with each their own unique atmosphere
On the second day of the trip we had a tour around the Gothic area in inner Barcelona, the sights including the many churches in the quarter. One of these were Santa Maria del Mar, well-known for its large Rosetta windows
On a warm day in the Barcelona streets we went to see Park Güell, which is another architectural design of Gaudí. The mosaic lizard in the picture has become a landmark of Gaudí while it is famously recognized in most parts of the world
After a long day of walking Simone, Emma and Maria take a well-deserved break in the sunny masterpiece that is Antoni Gaudi’s Park Güell
Outside Gaudí’s still incomplete church, the Sagrada Família, a group of students have assembled to share their opinions about the masterpiece, and, of course, pose for a quick picture
After several hours in a bus, students enjoy their newfound freedom in Portlligat, waiting to enter artist Salvador Dalí´s house and appreciate the magnificent gardens, which measure just above 2000 m2

On our trip to Barcelona, 2i was accompanied by three excellent teachers; Danish and art teacher Karin Waaben, English and theory of knowledge teacher Andrew Miller and art teacher and CAS coordinator Thomas Bargfeldt. Also huge thanks to student councillor Paul Bjergfelt, who worked hard to make the trip so wonderful
After visiting the Dalí house, many students took advantage of the stunning view to take pictures, such as the one we see here
Inner Barcelona is dominated by old Gothic architecture, dating back to medieval times, and the streets looked thereafter. Passages in the Gothic quarter tended to be narrow and filled with smaller shops
On the fourth day we traveled out-of-town to Figueres, birthplace of surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, and Cadaqués, the location of Dalí’s summer residence. In Figueres we went to the Dalí Theatre and Museum (pictured), largest collection of Dalí’s major works
The architectural construction of ‘La Segrada Família’ viewed from the outside front entrance. Gaudí has implied religious symbols and meanings in every figure he has used, which makes the sight of the church incredible
Also in Park Güell, another group is letting out their $wag – (okay maybe not that), are posing for a picture, after some got lost on the way there, but showed up with fresh strawberries as a nice surprise to the others
